Recover Files You Lost

Data Transfer is designed to move data from a corrupted Windows installation (one you can't directly access) to another hard drive or to a CD, DVD, or other removable media. The interface doesn't look like much (it's like an FTP program in which you copy from one directory to a new directory); the magic lies in being able to get to the data at all.

The Unformat utility lets you retrieve data lost as a result of formatting a hard drive; it opens with a scan of whatever partition you select, then provides you with a list of files and a means of copying them to a new location.

Undelete reads lost files from an existing partition and lets you bring them back to life. Keep in mind, however, that these utilities, like all such recovery utilities, work best if you act quickly after losing access to your files in the first place. If you reuse the deleted partition space or you keep writing to the hard drive containing the deleted files, you'll overwrite the data and find fewer and fewer of the files available for recovery.
